The power is out, no internet access, the only light you are using is via candle, flashlight, lantern or cell phone. You are about 4 hours into what could be a lengthy power outage, and you don’t want to use up all of your batteries, or candles. Your laptop/tablet/smartphone only have so many hours of battery life, and most of your favorite games require internet to be played. A number of years back, you donated your books in favor of your favorite eBook reading device, and now, here you are…bored in the dark.
Hopefully, as you have planned through of your emergency planning, you included something to keep you entertained in the dark. If not, here are some ideas that you may want to include for future events.
- Have a conversation
- Truly relax
- Work on your astronomy

- Nighttime photography
- Find North, check your land navigational skills at night
- Exercise
- Have a sensory party
- Draw a picture in the dark
- Get to know your neighbors
- Candlelit street party
- Bonfire with your neighbors, family, friends
- Meditate
- Go for a moonlit walk
- Storytime

What else can you think of to keep you or your family entertained during long power outages? What are other options that you have?
