In the event of a disaster, mobility & transportation will be a key piece in the event of a disaster. From gathering supplies to moving to a different location, having the ability to pack and move gear is essential. There are numerous forms of transportation, choosing which to use in which scenario will be your judgement call.
Motorized vehicles in many ways will be the most efficient way of providing mobility and transportation. This offers the ability to move the most gear in a single trip. This method offers the ability to move with multiple parties together. All of that said, this method does have some draw backs as well, vehicles can run out of fuel, vehicles can break down, it makes noise, but coming and going, or necessary roads may be blocked. Remember that different vehicle types offer different levels of mileage, access, or load haul so choose your vehicle wisely based upon your need.
Motorcycles are an option as well, though one of my least favorite. No real hauling capacity, one of the loudest forms of mobility, and the opportunity for major injuries. That said, motorcycles are built for specific uses, and don’t transition between uses very easily.
Bicycles are another great option for transportation. This option also offers a few more benefits over motorized vehicles, such as fuel is based off of your energy exerted, fewer parts that can break, and blocked roads may not be a stopping factor for your mobility. Bicycles are also an eco-friendlier solution for transportation. Bicycles have the ability to go where most motorized vehicles can’t go. Finally, bicycles are quiet, and allow you the ability to travel without being heard from a distance. Bicycles do have some draw backs though; they don’t usually have any real storage space, and they are limited to weight hauling capacities. Trailers offer more hauling capacity; however, they increase the noise made.
Skateboards, pogo sticks, hoverboards, unicycles and the like are welcomed to the list; however, don’t really offer a reliable mobility solution except for providing entertainment. Though if you seriously choose one of these, please let me know.
Walking is our final real option for a mobility solution. Again, all based off of your energy exerted, but walking offers you the ability to go through or around any obstacle or obstruction. This option can be as loud, or as quiet as you can maneuver. You can’t carry everything, so you will need to plan your pack load very carefully (discussed in another article). Ruck up and go!
With the above options, which will you choose to use following a disaster? Which one will offer you the solution to what you are trying to accomplish? Which will offer you the most reliable form of mobility?
